Choose an image format

Pick the right export for photos, diagrams, transparent logos and application forms.

Use JPEG for photographs

JPEG trades some image detail for smaller files. Start with a high-quality source. Reduce dimensions before lowering quality if the final image is only for an online form.

Keep sharp graphics in PNG

PNG preserves sharp text and transparent areas. When converting a logo to JPEG, inspect its new white background at the edges. Converting an existing JPEG to PNG preserves the current image but cannot restore lost detail.

Check dimensions separately

A size in kilobytes measures storage. Dimensions in pixels describe resolution. For a printed photo, use Passport photo to set physical dimensions at 300 DPI and review the authority’s framing rules.
